Tybee Neighbors Plan for the Year

For the past year many island residents have
been involved with the process of developing a
Master Plan for the Island. The process began
when DCA consultants visited the Island in 2006
and conducted a thorough study. Their report
encompassed many great ideas that came out of
their meetings with a variety of stakeholders.

Since then many of you participated in Tybee
Neighbors meetings that helped address key
issues in the DCA report and in the future plan.
In the fall a small team of Island residents was
appointed to work with consultants to shape the
direction of the plan and the community survey.
Earlier this year, the Planning Team was
expanded into our current Stakeholder Group.

Now that the Master Plan has been approved by
DCA and the Tybee Island City Council we need
to implement the plan.

A significant collaborative effort will be required in
order to implement this plan that will be such a
critical part of the Island’s future. The Tybee
Neighbors Planning Team believes that we can
use our time most effectively right now by
continuing to support this effort. For this reason
we will not hold regular Tybee Neighbor monthly
meetings until the new Master Plan is being
implemented. Instead we are encouraging those
concerned about Tybee’s future to attend future
meetings to become active in helping implement
the Master Plan that will become so important in
shaping the future of Tybee Island.

Instead of monthly meetings we will be
supporting the following activities. Each of these
areas has a working team. If you'd like to join
one of these teams, please use

    Tybee Island Welcomes the
    Indiana National Guard- A Big
    Success!

    Between February 26th and March
    5th several hundred members of
    the Indiana National Guard and
their families spent their leave on
    Tybee before their deployment to
    Iraq.

A special thank you to those  65
    local businesses that offered
    military discounts or specials.

    The Tybee Light Station and
    Museum will offer free admission
for military families and the Marine
Science Center will offer 50% off
    admission. During this time

    The City of Tybee Island
    decorated with patriotic bunting
    and provided free parking for
    those with military ids.

    Local citizens supported the effort
by flying flags and decorating with
    yellow ribbons.

    This project was coordinated by
    representatives from Tybee Adopt
    a Soldier, Tybee Neighbors and
    Mermaid Cottages.
